In a world where mass-produced goods flood the market and fast consumerism dominates, many of us are seeking ways to reconnect—with ourselves, with culture, and with the planet. For me, that reconnection has been strengthened through crochet. More than just a craft, crochet is a gentle form of resistance: a way to decolonize our everyday lives by embracing the slow, intentional act of making with our own hands.

Decolonizing isn’t only about history, it’s about reshaping how we live now. It means choosing to step away from the endless cycle of buying and discarding, and instead, reclaiming traditional skills that sustain us and honor cultural stories. Crochet, with its long and diverse history across many peoples, invites us into that space. When I pick up my yarn and hook, I’m not just creating a cozy or a gift — I’m participating in a larger movement toward mindful living.
By making my own things, I’m saying no to the disposability of fast fashion and mass production. Each stitch is an act of care — for myself, for the maker community, and for the Earth. More than that, crochet is empowering. It connects me with a global community of makers who are reviving skills that have been marginalized or forgotten, and who are building new traditions grounded in sustainability and creativity.

For women like us, who want to live softer, liberated lives that align with our values, crochet offers something powerful: a chance to slow down, to create, and to take back control over what we consume and how we impact the world.

Tips to Start Your Mindful Crochet Journey

1. Choose quality, sustainable yarns — Explore natural fibers or ethically sourced yarns that align with your values. Small-batch makers and eco-friendly brands often have beautiful options that respect the planet.

2. Start with meaningful projects — Pick patterns or items that serve practical needs or bring joy, like coffee cozies or calming blankets. Let your projects reflect your intention to create useful, lasting items rather than impulse-made décor.

3. Learn from diverse voices — Connect with makers who honor different cultural traditions and histories in their craft. This can deepen your understanding of the art and support decolonizing narratives in fiber arts.

4. Slow down and savor the process — Crochet isn’t about rushing to finish. Take time to enjoy each stitch as a moment of mindfulness and care for yourself.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to join me in The Healing Hook Hub—a special space in our NutrisultsCommunity Mighty Network where where creativity meets comfort — easing pain so you can stitch with joy. Here women come together to share handmade creativity, wellness, and support for a softer, more liberated way of living. Together, we practice gentle MELT Method techniques designed to ease pain, explore traditional skills, stories, and projects that help us buy less, make more, and live in harmony with the planet and each other.
